Weather Alert: Hurricane Eta

Location: Throughout the country

Event: The Nicaraguan disaster management agency (SINAPRED) has issued a yellow warning for the northern Caribbean coast due to Hurricane Eta, which is expected to make landfall early November 3. Hurricane Eta is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 inches over Nicaragua. These rainfall amounts can produce life-threatening flash flooding and landslides. In addition, a dangerous storm surge is expected along the coast of Nicaragua, raising water levels by as much as 10 to 15 feet above normal tide levels.

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor the progress of this storm system as its trajectory could change suddenly; additional watches or warnings are likely to be issued.
  • All U.S. citizens should ensure that they have adequate food, water, fuel and prescription medications on hand at all times as part of their standard emergency preparedness plan.
