Possible Volcanic Activity – Volcán Concepción, Ometepe

The U.S. Embassy alerts U.S. citizens that the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) recommends against any attempt to climb Concepción volcano in Nicaragua, due to recent increased emissions of gases and volcanic material that could pose a danger.  Due to the unpredictable nature of volcanoes, we urge U.S. citizens to avoid hiking or climbing on or around the volcano until INETER rescinds its recommendation.

The Concepción volcano is located on the island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor local media reports and follow guidance and instructions from local authorities.

U.S. citizens should also monitor the websites of the Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies (INETER) and the Nicaraguan Emergency Alert System (SINAPRED).
