Nicaraguan National Police Return Vehicles to U.S. Embassy

Statement to the Press
June 27, 2018

On Monday, June 25, 2018, the Embassy of the United States of America requested that the Nicaraguan National Police (NNP) return or pay for vehicles donated by the United States Government for legitimate policing activities. Some of these vehicles were used by the NNP, and irregular forces under their command, to violently suppress the voice of Nicaraguans peacefully protesting the actions of their government. These actions put the Government of Nicaragua in violation of the terms of the Letter of Agreement (LOA) that established United States Government cooperation with the Nicaraguan National Police.

The NNP cooperated with our request and initiated return of the vehicles on June 26. The Department of State condemns the continued violence and intimidation campaign by the Government of Nicaragua, calling the attacks and threats on peaceful protestors and the population at-large unacceptable. The Department continues to urge all parties to pursue a constructive and peaceful resolution through the Catholic Church-sponsored National Dialogue.
