Overseas employees will demonstrate the following characteristics essential for being a successful member of the United States Embassy, Consulate, or Mission team. The work you’ll do will have an impact on the world. You will be asked to serve at one of any of the more than 270 embassies, consulates and other diplomatic missions in The Americas, Africa, Europe and Eurasia, East Asia and Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, and South Asia. The Foreign National Student Intern Program (FNSIP) is designed for university students who are non-U.S. citizens seeking internships with U.S. Missions abroad. The program provides foreign national students with valuable educational experience and assists the U.S. Embassy in accomplishing its goals.
The purpose of the Program is to offer students the challenge of working in a foreign affairs arena, at the same time the Embassy benefits from their assistance. The program is open to all university students who meet the required qualifications and are available to work for a short period (from three to six months). The Human Resources Office establishes an open application season each year, subject to requests for intern positions from agencies and sections within the embassy.

Diplomats in Residence (DIRs) are career Foreign Service Officers and Specialists located throughout the U.S. who provide guidance and advice on careers, internships and fellowships to students and professionals in the communities they serve. DIRs are available to answer questions and share insight with those interested in Foreign and Civil Service careers, internships and fellowships.
