2024 – 2025 Program Cycle

Program Objectives

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program allows graduate students from select countries to study and conduct research in the United States. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide, including Nicaragua.

The objective of the Fulbright Program is to enable fellowship recipients to pursue academic and professional degrees and to develop their professional skills in their fields. The program is an open competition and participants are selected based on their individual merit, without regard to institution, affiliation, race, orientation, or belief.

Fields Of Study

Applications will be accepted for degree programs in the following fields of study:

  • Business/Public Administration
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Journalism & Communications
  • Social Sciences (e.g. American Studies, Economics, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, and Linguistics)
  • Natural Sciences (e.g., Agriculture and Natural Resources)
  • Social Work

Selection Criteria

  • Applicants need to meet the following criteria:
  • Nicaraguan citizenship and current residency in Nicaragua.
  • Undergraduate diploma equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts (BA), or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.
  • Excellent academic background.
  • Strong command of the English language (recommended 80 or above, on the TOEFL iBT).
  • Little to no experience in the United States.
  • Potential benefit to Nicaragua after return from studies.

Individuals who are Not Eligible for a Fulbright grant:

  • Nicaraguans who are currently studying, researching, or lecturing in American universities.
  • Individuals who intend to pursue an internship, residency, or research at a U.S. school of medicine or dentistry in the United States.
  • Individuals who are currently living or working in the United States, or who have had extensive recent experience in the United States.
  • Dual citizens of Nicaragua and the United States

Application Procedure

  • Applications are due by midnight on Friday, June 9, 2023.
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Make sure you click “Submit” once you have completed all necessary fields, so your application can be considered “complete”.
  • Make sure to upload all required supporting documentation (diplomas, transcripts, etc.), scanned originals in Spanish, and official English translations.
  • Make sure your three recommenders can submit their letters to the application platform in English.

Note: Applicants may only apply for one award per application cycle. If you have applied to past cycles, you do not need to create a new profile, but you must make sure to select “2024-2025” to apply to the new cycle.

Timeline

  • April 7, 2023: Competition opens.
  • June 9, 2023: Deadline for applications (11:59pm, Nicaragua time)
  • July 2023: Invitation for interviews for shortlisted candidates.
  • August-September 2023: Notification of Fulbright selection and candidacy by Embassy.
  • October 2023: Following notification by the Embassy, selected candidates take required standardized tests (e.g., TOEFL, GRE and/or GMAT).
  • November 2023: Applicants are notified of final selection for fellowship by Fulbright Scholarship Board, Washington, DC.
  • December 2023-January 2024: University application submissions in coordination with IIE’s Placement Office.
  • March-May 2024: University admission decisions.
  • July-September 2024: Departure for the United States, beginning of academic programs.
