Remarks by U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua, Laura F. Dogu
Managua, December 15, 2015
It is a great pleasure to be with you tonight to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Delta Airlines in Nicaragua. On behalf of the United States Embassy, I am honored to congratulate all Delta Airlines staff on this achievement.
In the last 10 years, Delta has contributed to strengthening the economic and friendly ties between the United States and Nicaragua. Every day, Delta transports businessmen, volunteer groups, students, artists, and tourists between our two countries. With each trip, the bonds between our countries are strengthened.
From its beginnings, the founder of Delta, C.E. Woolman, acknowledged that the work of an airline is not limited to transporting people and goods. On one occasion, he told his colleagues: “We have the opportunity to contribute, to a certain extent, to the cause of a better understanding at the international level.”
As an airline operating worldwide, Delta also stands out as a socially responsible company. For example, they are working to reach ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and are urging their suppliers to adopt environmentally sound practices.
Its supplier chain has been recognized by the Dow Jones index as one of the most sustainable in the industry. Delta also supports businesses owned by women and minorities around the world. Here in Nicaragua, Delta supports the fight against cancer by donating mammogram machines to the Association of Women against Cancer and through their sponsorship of the Race for the Cure. Delta demonstrates what a corporation can achieve by serving not only its customers and shareholders but also the community.
Delta has played an important role in the growth of Nicaragua’s economy and in strengthening its ties with the United States and the world. In other words, Delta connects Nicaragua with the world and the world with Nicaragua. You have plenty of reasons to be proud of your work.
I am very happy to be with you tonight to celebrate what you have achieved so far and the successes that you will surely reap in the future. I congratulate Delta and its collaborators for their success and I want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
